Background of the Study

Sexual morality is a critical aspect of personal development, and religious education has been widely recognized as an influential factor in shaping students’ attitudes towards sexual behavior. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, religious education forms an integral part of the secondary school curriculum, aiming to impart values that govern sexual conduct and promote responsible behavior. The curriculum is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sexual ethics, emphasizing concepts such as chastity, fidelity, and respect for one’s body. Research indicates that when students are exposed to religious teachings that address sexual morality, they are more likely to adopt behaviors that align with socially and morally acceptable standards (Aminu, 2023). In this context, religious education is not merely about transmitting doctrinal beliefs but also about providing a moral framework that guides personal choices and social interactions. Educators, in collaboration with religious leaders, use a variety of pedagogical methods including lectures, discussions, and role-playing exercises to engage students in critical reflection on issues of sexual morality (Babatunde, 2024). This holistic approach seeks to create an environment where ethical and moral considerations are deeply embedded in the decision-making processes of young individuals. Additionally, religious education in Makurdi addresses the challenges posed by modern influences such as media and peer pressure, which often contribute to the erosion of traditional values regarding sexual conduct (Chinwe, 2025). The integration of moral and religious instruction in this area is aimed at equipping students with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of sexual relationships and to make informed, ethical decisions. By analyzing the curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and the socio-cultural context of Makurdi LGA, this study intends to provide a detailed account of how religious education influences sexual morality. The research will further examine whether the current pedagogical strategies are effective in mitigating risky sexual behaviors and promoting responsible attitudes among students, thereby contributing to broader social and health objectives.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the comprehensive design of religious education curricula aimed at promoting sexual morality, challenges remain in ensuring that these teachings translate into positive behavioral outcomes among secondary school students in Makurdi LGA. While the curriculum emphasizes virtues such as chastity, self-respect, and responsibility, anecdotal evidence and preliminary surveys suggest that there is a persistent gap between the taught values and the actual attitudes and behaviors of students. Contributing factors to this gap include inconsistent teaching methods, cultural pressures, and the pervasive influence of modern media that often conflicts with religious precepts. Additionally, there is a noted deficiency in teacher training regarding sensitive discussions of sexual morality, which further undermines the effective delivery of the curriculum (Oluwaseun, 2023). This misalignment raises concerns about the overall impact of religious education on curbing risky sexual behaviors and promoting responsible sexual conduct. The problem is compounded by social stigmas and taboos that restrict open discussions on sexual issues, thereby limiting students’ access to comprehensive moral guidance. The study, therefore, seeks to identify the challenges hindering the effective integration of religious teachings on sexual morality into everyday practice and to assess the extent to which these teachings influence students’ attitudes and behaviors. By addressing these concerns, the research aims to bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical application, ensuring that religious education effectively supports the development of responsible sexual attitudes among students (Adeyemi, 2024; Eze, 2025; Oluwaseun, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

• To evaluate the impact of religious education on students’ sexual morality.

• To identify the challenges in delivering effective religious instruction on sexual ethics.

• To propose recommendations for enhancing the curriculum and teacher training in sexual morality education.

Research Questions:

• How does religious education influence students’ attitudes towards sexual morality?

• What challenges are faced by educators when addressing sexual ethics in the classroom?

• What strategies can improve the effectiveness of religious education in promoting responsible sexual behavior?

Research Hypotheses:

• H₁: Religious education significantly influences students’ attitudes towards sexual morality.

• H₂: Inadequate teacher training adversely affects the delivery of sexual morality education.

• H₃: Enhanced curriculum content leads to improved sexual ethical behaviors among students.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the critical role of religious education in shaping sexual morality among secondary school students. By identifying the barriers to effective instruction and offering strategic recommendations, the research provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and community leaders. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of a more robust curriculum and better-trained teachers, ultimately promoting responsible sexual behaviors and enhancing the overall moral fabric of the society in Makurdi LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to secondary schools in Makurdi LGA, Benue State, and focuses solely on the influence of religious education on sexual morality. Limitations include variations in teaching practices and cultural sensitivities related to sexual issues.

Definitions of Terms:

• Sexual Morality: The principles and values that guide acceptable sexual behavior.

• Religious Education: Instruction that incorporates moral, spiritual, and ethical teachings derived from religious traditions.

• Teacher Training: Professional development activities aimed at enhancing educators’ skills in delivering sensitive and complex subject matter.
